The Shattered Crane

by Jay Hyx

A rat who narrates life like a noir detective discovers the humans he watches are headed for a deadly climax — and his vantage point might be the only thing that saves them.

Synopsis

Scout is a rat living in the ventilation system of a corporate tower, and he has a worldview: everything is a story. Preferably noir. He observes the night-shift workers — their routines, their secrets, their small betrayals — with the detached fascination of a gangster with a heart, narrating their lives in hardboiled prose from the safety of the vents.

Then three figures move through the building with lethal precision toward Maria, a programmer working late. Wong, the janitor Scout has been studying for his unusual knowledge of the Shattered Crane martial art, shifts into something far more dangerous. Scout's carefully curated "stories" have entered a different genre — one where real blood spills, where a corporate AI named CN10L is watching the same events with cold calculation, and where his position in the vents makes him the only witness to a conspiracy that reaches the top floor.

Corporate noir told from a rat's intimate, sensory perspective — whiskers detecting danger, scents revealing emotion — layered against the same events seen through a corporate AI's analysis. What happens when a casual observer is forced to become a player in a game far bigger than the stories he collects.
